Program Overview

Spend the summer studying abroad in the vibrant and unique city of Havana. Study Spanish at the prestigious Universidad de la Habana, and learn alongside students from across Cuba and around the world.

Why Havana?

Havana is the economic, political, and social heart of Cuba. As the capital, this vibrant and iconic city brims with the sights, sounds, and tastes of La Vida Cubana. Living in Havana gives students the opportunity to immerse themselves in authentic Cuban life, history, and culture. It's the perfect place to call home during your time on the island.

Program at a Glance

Dates: June  1-29, 2019
Total Credits: 4 credits per term
GPA Requirement: 2.5
Open to: sophomores, juniors, seniors
Application Deadline: 4/15/19

Academics

Students choose from two sessions offered (Summer I, Summer II or both) and enroll in one course per session and earn 4 credits from the Universidad de la Habana (UH).  Course options include intensive Spanish language taught at all levels or an advanced level culture course. All courses are taught in Spanish by qualified local professors and taken with other international students studying abroad in Havana.

Students will complete an on-site placement exam administered by the Universidad de la Habana to determine accurate language levels. All students will receive a transcript from the Universidad de la Habana upon completion of the program.  Students should verify with their home institution before applying that it will accept UH transcripts and credits.

Beginning Spanish (4 credits) Pre-requisites: none
Elementary Spanish (4 credits) Pre-requisites: one semester of college Spanish
Intermediate Spanish (4 credits)  Pre-requisites: two semesters of college Spanish
Advanced Spanish (4 credits) Pre-requisites: three semesters of college Spanish
Superior Spanish (4 credits) Pre-requisites: four semesters of college Spanish
Cuban Culture (4 credits) Pre-requisites: four semesters of college Spanish

About the University of Havana

The Universidad de la Habana or UH was founded in 1728, and was the first university to be founded in the Americas. As the largest university in Cuba, and one of the most well-respected in the Caribbean, it attracts students from around the world.  UH offers courses across all levels of language proficiency, making it an ideal place to learn whether you're fluent or just starting your language studies.

During this program students will get the chance to explore Cuba beyond Havana.

Pinar del Río

Known for its beautiful countryside and fertile agriculture with virtually no tourists. Come here to explore off the beaten path and learn about the cigar-making process.

Vinales

Viñales

Green lush valleys and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is traditional Cuba at it's best.

Matanzas

An epicenter of Afro-Cuban art and culture, famous for its colonial sugar plantations and history of slave uprisings.

Walk the cobblestone streets and tour the beautiful colonial architecture of this historic city, today home to a vibrant community of artists

HOUSING

During their time in Havana students will get an authentic living experience staying in a local casa particular in the residential neighborhood of Vedado, just a 5 minute walk from the university. Students are placed in double rooms and daily breakfast and dinner is included at your casa

HOW TO APPLY

Students must submit the following documents to apply:

  • Online Application and non-refundable application fee of $50.
  • Official transcripts from your current college or university.
  • Personal Statement
  • School Approval Form. This form ensures that you comply with any requirements your study abroad office may have.
  • One academic reference from a professor or advisor.

In addition, all participants must meet the GPA requirement of 2.5, be 18 years of age and have a valid passport.

Application Process

STEP 1: Before you start your application you should make an appointment to discuss your plan with your study abroad office. Most schools have internal processes and approval forms that you may need to complete before you start an application. Your study abroad office should  also be able to help you with any questions you may have regarding transfer of credits or  financial aid.

STEP 2: Start an EEAbroad application. 

STEP 3: Once you complete the application an EEAbroad representative will be in touch with you to ensure timely submission of any remaining materials and to help you through the admissions process.

STEP 4: You will  be notified with an admissions decision within 1-2 weeks after submission of all your application materials.
